Useful, if you prefer to use that word, yes. It was not in our interest or the interests of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Jordan or Turkey to have a destablized region. It is also highly arguable that it is not in the interest of the US or the Gulf States to have Iran dominating the Persian Gulf, and hence the flow of oil to the West...
