China Suspends Military
Ties With U.S.
11:10 p.m. May 09, 1999 Eastern

BEIJING (Reuters) - China has
suspended military exchanges with
the United States in the wake of
NATO's mistaken bombing of the
Chinese embassy in Yugoslavia.

''China has decided to postpone
the high-level military contacts with
the United States,'' Foreign Ministry
spokesman Zhu Bangzao said in a
statement released by the official
Xinhua news agency.

''China has decided to postpone its
consultations with the United States
in the fields of proliferation
prevention, arms control and
international security,'' the statement
said.

It came after two days of violent
protests outside the United States
and British embassies in Beijing in
the wake of the strike, which killed
four people and injured more than
20.

China and the United States had
taken tentative steps toward
building stronger military ties after
decades of mistrust. Fore Beijing,
that included rebuilding the image of
China's military after the 1989 army
crackdown on protesters in
Tiananmen Square.

The exchanges, which included
high-level visits and a U.S. program
to improve the level of Chinese
officer training, peaked last
October when both sides said they
had increased the range of common
ground.
