"3Com Gigabit Ethernet switch excels at zero-loss throughput tests"

Users building high-performance flat networks based on Gigabit Ethernet may
want to examine 3Com Corp.'s CoreBuilder 9000 Enterprise switch, which
recently posted impressive results in a series of throughput tests conducted by
The Tolly Group.

3Com commissioned The Tolly Group to benchmark the layer 2 zero-loss
throughput of the CoreBuilder 9000 in both a 24-port Gigabit Ethernet and a
240-port Fast Ethernet configuration.

The CoreBuilder 9500 successfully delivered an aggregate switching throughput
of 35,714,286 frames per second for 64-byte frames on both configurations
tested. This represents the maximum theoretical forwarding rate for both test
scenarios.
The CoreBuilder 9500 also exhibited zero packet loss with line-rate
bidirectional Fast Ethernet/Gigabit Ethernet data consisting of 64-, 512-, 1,024-,
and 1,518-byte packets.

The CoreBuilder 9500's performance underscores the fact that it can be used as
a high-end aggregation point for up to 24 departmental Fast Ethernet switches,
each outfitted with a single Gigabit Ethernet uplink. While outfitted with 240
Fast Ethernet links, the CoreBuilder 9000 can provide direct services to 100
Mbit/s–attached servers or workstations, and provide uplink services to legacy
10/100 Mbit/s switches.
