Steve, [edited] thanks for the information. Since your experience with
virus scanners is so extensive, it is something to consider.
My switching to Norton was mostly because I wanted the utility
package. And that came with a scanner included. That scanner
didn't pick up the false virus.

PS: at the time the false virus was detected I had to treat
it as a real virus. The McAfee program just said it was not fixable and recommended deletion of the file. This I did. Since this file
was recreated whenever I downloaded data from a known vendor,
it was worrisome until the vendor assured me nothing was amiss.
