lorrie, You see, you really are on the Left. Supposing these crises are real, it is indeed because of excessive consumption and the over-reaching of technology. However, most of them are dubious:The nuclear threat has not been eliminated, but it has receded; the greenhouse effect is can be handled without extreme measures; the destruction of the rainforests can also be handled without extremity; more species go extinct naturally than through human agency; acid rain is more prevalent through natural processes than any other cause; with the increase in proven oil reserves, and especially the promise of the Caspian reserves, there is not energy crisis--- we are probably good for more than 200 years; and the other problems will only be solved by economic growth and technology....
