Chevron in talks to buy Texaco - WSJ

NEW YORK, May 9 (Reuters) - Chevron Corp is in preliminary discussions to acquire Texaco Inc for about $42 billion, or $80 per share, according to a report on The Wall Street Journal Interactive, the electronic version of the financial newspaper The Wall Street Journal.

The report said the sides are not near an agreement, and may not reach one.

The report cited ''people familiar'' with the talks, and said the $80 per share price discussed would represent about a 19 percent premium over Texaco's closing price Friday of $67.25.

Neither Texaco nor Chevron were immediately available to comment.
