I totally with the implication of this question. The key question is how to categorize buying 3rd party software and have it customized to one's own processes. Is that building one's own shoes or is that selecting the best possible shoes and have it fit for one's needs? Going the ASP way implies that software will become if not one size fit all then probably just a few sizes fit many - because the cost for an ASP to provide totally customized app for each client will drive the cost to a point at least equal to that of private ownership.

Accessing one's own data over the web anywhere, anytime can be done w/o having to cede control of one's data. Should one have one's own data out of one's total control? Anyone can buy sun.net technology from Sun and make available their data securely over the web to their own users. I don't see the point in trying to make webbizing synonymous to outsourcing.

OK, Sun can make a very decent return on investment if there are a lot of Jini-branded household items bought. But, if there's truly a need - which I doubt a whole lot about - for making one's household devices individually and directly accessible over the web, who will really make money there? If Sun really cares about the growth in handheld devices - either Sun should aim to win it with java os or find a way to make money with win ce. (Forget about the Palm Pilot, but that's another posting, if any, somewhere else.)
