The 'Q' in Compaq does - compatible quality
I think I mentioned this before - the real reason for the name "Compaq" was because the original founders could not trademark "Compact" which was their first choice, so they changed the "ct" to a "Q". The "compatible quality" spin came later. The early machines were of very high quality, especially when compared to IBM machines of the day, since the original engineers were more familiar with military hardware than commercial stuff.
