read this very slowly twice.
Barrett: We are still very excited about the prospects of RDRAMs. But it will basically be an issue of availability, cost and performance. We had hoped that [the RDRAMs] would be available about mid-year. That looks like it will slip to the third quarter. [But this] really depends on whether the DRAM suppliers who are supplying RDRAM can produce the product at the right speed at the right cost. If they are not able to compete with the 133-MHz SDRAM or whatever the alternatives are, then it could be a real challenge. But we still think that RDRAM has a strong technical capability.

sounds like a great negotiator hedging his bets, making a typical ceo statement. these guys are trained by the lawyers to never project positive statements about another companies products or production. part of lawsuit avoidance 101. rmbs employees hedge the same way as do all others.

Richard,

I agree. I read Barrett's statement and to me it is very "wishy washy" and not a "strong endorsement" of RDRAM. His comment is not negative nor is it the type of comment I would expect if they are truly 100% committed to RDRAM....Make sense?

I mean, one should read this without their "I own 500 or 1,000 shares of RMBS" shareholder lenses on....This is not, IMHO, a 100% "I love RMBS" statement...If it works, great, they love RMBS. If it doesn't, bye bye!! I am not trying to be over dramatic, but I see nothing lately that has changed the current roadmap uncertainty issues. Just a lot of hope from some people.

If they are not able to compete with the 133-MHz SDRAM or whatever the alternatives are, then it could be a real challenge. But we still think that RDRAM has a strong technical capability.

Richard,

Here's the take, one way or the other, we are going into the future of higher bandwidth. Faster processing speed. It's going to happen. So either you think it won't happen, or you think it will. You know its going to happen.

Either you think Intel with the this new technology called Rambus will take us there or it won't. We are down to those subtle facts, will Rambus take us into the future, or will some other technology take us there? One way or the other, we are going there.
