I read The Naked and the Dead so long ago that I hardly remember it, and haven't had the impulse to reread it. I remember from it that war is horrible, that certain officers are psychopaths and enjoy war, and I remember a spectacular description of a tropical storm, and to tell you the truth, that's all. But you know, it's hard not to look at Mailer through the lens of what he became-- a kind of spokesman for a sort of radically sexist, silly, id-based, self-celebrating ethos. (I know that's not relevant to assessing his works literarily; I'm just explicating my reaction to him in general. I think he's an annoying bore, and this prejudices me against his works, unreasonably, I know.)
