Rocket Red,
here is some more playing with numbers I did over on the other forum:

Subject: How many and How big?

Willp, Here is some pre-1975 DeBeer's data not readily
available for your consideration (statisticly that is):

Mine(Dutoitspan); average size of large crystal exceeding ten
carats (20.1carats); Ratio of total weight of large crystals to
total production 17.1%; Number of large crystals per
100,000 carats 848.

Mine(Wesselton); average size of large crystals exceeding 10
carats (15.8 carats); Ratio of total weight of large crystals to
total production 2.1%; Number of large crystals per 100,000
carats 135

Mine (Bultfontein); average size of large crystals exceeding
ten carats (15.0 carats); ratio of total weight of large crystals
to total production 0.9%; Number of large crystals per
100,000 carats 58

You may also find this data interesting:

Mine(Dutoitspan); average size of crystals exceeding 100
carats in size (137.9 carats); ratio of total weight of large
crystals to total production 0.84%; number of large crystals
per 100,000 carats 61

Mine(Wesselton); average size of crystals exceeding 100
carats (134.7); ratio of total weight of large crystals to total
productin (nil);number of large crystals per 100,000 carats
(none)

Mine (Bultfontein); average size of crystals exceeding 100
carats (134.0); ratio of total weight of large crystals to total
production 0.01%; number of large crystals per 100,000
carats (1).

At Snap lake there was one diamond over ten carats and a
fragment inferred to represent a diamond of 14
carats........this represents a ratio of about 10.6% of total
weight of large crystals over 10 carats to total carat weight
recovered from the mini-bulk(not as good as Dutoitspan's
17.1%).....assuming the grade of the 6000 tonne bulk sample
is 1.5 carats per tonne, we might reasonably expect a
recovery of 47 diamonds greater than 10 carats in size(an
average of about 20 carats per stone)......and assuming that
0.52 % of total weight recovered is made up of crystals larger
than 100 carats in size, perhaps 3 diamonds greater than 100
carats in size(averaging 135 carats per stone) will be
recovered!!!!!!!! regards, teevee PS: I threw the envelope out
right away:-)
