Mile...like Uncle, I think you add a great deal to this thread

On any roller coaster like this it is vitally important to "take the temperature" of posters you have some sense about. As for me, every time there is some news I want to know what certain posters whose opinions I respect think about it. I'll figure out how much weight to give. Mile, you will always be in that group.

Y'all have been busy this weekend -- I don't usually have to catch up with this many posts on Sunday night.

There've been some interesting dynamics this weekend. Now that I've got a better handle on the technology, I've got to side with the camp that says that Rambus is the future (big surprise <G>!). If you understood the technical discussions, then you know that there's nothing that comes close to the performance possibilities of DRDRAM -- not 133Mhz SDRAM, not DDR DRAM, not no one, not no how. I've said before that it's now just a manufacturing issue now, and since we've heard from Samsung and others that it's on its way, it's not even that big an issue. If not now, then with the .18 micron processes later this year. But none of the other technologies are going to be able to fill the needs of 1Ghz processors (this Fall? early next year?), and none of these other options are even going to be in the ballpark when we hit 2Ghz 18 months after that. This is the only technology that can grow into the future. With just a 2-byte wide channel, it outstrips any other option. When 133Mhz SDRAM is used as the underlying DRAM, you'll get a 2.16 GBs transfer rate. Add a second Rambus channel (which brings you closer to the number of pins DDR DRAM requires), and you'll be at 4.3GBs. And that's without any additional improvements by the Rambus folk. The DDR DRAM/SLDRAM folks are not going to be able to match that.
