Sure its economic, to an extent.

But were the US economy to collapse, it is safe to say that we'd still be better off than the rest of the world and there would be even more people banging down the doors to come here.

The US is far more than your hyper-cynical view of economic prostitution (and I thought I was getting cynical.. :0). It is about respect for the individual and a guarantee of basic civil rights protected by a constitution under which EVERY American is covered (and even non-citizens to a certain degree).

Again, give us a 10% drop in the economy in the US and you will see a 30-50% decline in economic output overseas. Which would result in greater civil unrest?
