<<I looked down. Looking up at me - directly up at me - was a thick yellow snake. Its black, obsidian eyes seemed locked on mine. It stared back at me unwavering. And it was three to four inches from my ankle.>>

This was a yellow snake on a red dirt road, right? And you didn't notice it? It's wise to glance down once in a while in snake country. I hope you didn't ruin your undies.

The egg yolks- They were pale because they were from free ranging chickens. Our eggs come from chickens fed pelletized feed in egg factories. Find a farmer who keeps some free roamers in his back yard and you can have the same tasty eggs.

May I suggest that your first paragraph be rewritten something like this:

It was raining in Sunyadi. And how!

>>At about 5:30 a.m. the rain suddenly ceased falling. <<

Presumably, after 5:30 pm the rain started rising.

Why not say --- "The rain stopped at about 5:30 am."

>> The eggs
were laid fresh from a hen less than an hour earlier and tasted better than any I have
ever had in the U.S. <<

It is customary for hens to limit themselves to one egg a day. Not only does that hen lay tasty eggs but lays them two at a time.

I am curious: Did John notice the snake before he told you? Am I missing some piece of time here?

I admit that I swallowed a bit nervously just reading this story.
