The Quiet Revolution Needs Speakers..... >>Now we're seeing other products but it's not big news or dare I say, not as big as we'd like it to be. Some days I want to scream "SPEND SOME $$$ ON REAL ADVERTISING" and other days I'm satisfied with the "Quiet Revolution". Either way, it means I'm not totally happy with Novell's image.>> Peter: I liked your arrogance vs. confidence picture. I must contend that confidence is something gained when we continually expose ourselves to new ways of failing every day. We gain confidence NOT in NOT failing, but in the degree to which we react to failure positively. Arrogance sets in when we stop reaching, thus stop failing. We pull back from the furnace, stop throwing logs inside, sit back and reflect on the good job we've done. Arrogance feeds off fear. Fear drives arrogance. Fear naturally compells us to pull back and defend our own selfish interests rather than pursue those of our clients and others. We breed fear when we stop loving. We become more concerned about "Me" and less about others or "we". When there's fear around, the client become secondary to MY position. I look out after ME, before I consider the position of my client. Love on the other hand - and I don't mean to get all gushy here - is the energy that drives us to show interest in the ideas, lives and conditions of those around us. Love compells us to listen and humbly consider the value-added in each interaction we make. This is very hard to fathom or consider when we are driven by fear and the cords of arrogance place us in that smug position which keeps fear at bay while we fool ourselves into thinking we are still making progress. Well, there IS no progress unless there is failure. I want Novell to fail, pick themselves up and fail again. The more this happens the stronger they will become. They should institute failure seminars inside and outside Novell. We are beyond Peters. This is an internet-fired world where failure is KING and the individuals are the King's escorts. In the successful companies of the future, individuals need to coronate the KING at least once every day to remain vibrant and humble and open for the chance to receive those magical gifts - those ideas - that define leadership. >>There's one thing in all of this that keeps me centered - Novell has directory religon and this is the FUTURE. I don't see Novell sliding back down the mountain for that one reason. Also, Dr. Schmidt has my vote of confidence in that he's not from that "old culture" and won't stand for even a ONE quarter slip up (hiccup?). And I may regret saying this but it may just take such an event to get the shake out we desperately want.>> Eric may not be from that "old culture" but unless he's successfully cloned himself or found many others to rally behind this need for common vigilance, much of that "old culture" can and will find its way back into Novell's fabric. I'm not saying there are layoffs. I am simply sensing that Novell is being pushed around by some large corporate accounts. On second thought, perhaps something IS up. I've speculated about Lucent buying Novell before. I know AT&T and Novell are working very closely together. Somehow, I get this strange feeling that Novell has had its head turned. They need to take control and claim ownership for what they can rightfully lead - A Directory-Based Revolution Based On The Individual. Novell needs to find some more direct way to claim eyeballs, mindballs and all the trust they can mine and package along the way. I'm thinking of that classic ad with the guy with long hair in the black chair with the speakers blasting. It's time to start blasting. NDS is not a pussyfoot technology religion. They have to evangelize this thing. I just saying I sense a falloff in this energy. GO!!
