In truth, putting together a custom-designed PC including software is a very hard job and a lot of value that Dell provides is that they can do is as quickly as they can (I think a lot more than 2 minutes, probably closer to 20), and save money on labor costs. The fact that they can do it quicker than you can is a big advantage for them.

However you wish to characterize Dell's putting together a PC out of materials from Intel and Microsoft (and a bunch of other companies), it is certainly a lot more work than Amazon putting together a book from the St. Martin's Press, right? What can Amazon do with a book that you can't?
