Networking Companies Target New Markets at Networld+Interop
Las Vegas, May 9 (Bloomberg) -- 3Com Corp., the No. 2 maker of computer-networking equipment, No. 4 Cabletron Systems Inc. and others will unveil new ways of linking computers and other devices to the Internet at a trade show this week.

At Networld+Interop 99 in Las Vegas, 3Com plans to show products that use wireless technology to link PCs to each other as well as to electronics devices such as cellular phones and hand-held computers like 3Com's PalmPilot organizer.

Cisco Systems Inc., the No. 1 network-equipment maker, also will show off its latest gear. Networld+Interop, which once focused on products to link computers in so-called local area networks, or LANs, has shifted to equipment that carries Internet traffic as networking sales to corporations has slowed. ''Most of the interesting stuff in networking these days is happening outside the LAN,'' said Brendan Hannigan, an analyst with Forrester Research in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Cisco and Cabletron, along with Lucent Technologies Inc., the leading phone-equipment maker, and Nortel Networks Inc., No. 2 in North America, are racing to develop data-networking equipment for phone companies. Lucent and Nortel are also expected to demonstrate products at the show.

Telecommunications providers want new equipment that combines voice, data and video on their networks, which are being jammed with surging Internet traffic. Phone companies are expected to spend as much as $50 billion annually on networking gear by 2005, according to market researcher CIMI Corp. in Voorhees, New Jersey.

3Com, which has been hurt by falling prices and slowing sales of its computer modems and connector cards, is shifting its focus to building new equipment that connects users to the Internet at high speeds.

Cabletron is expected to unveil add-on cards that boost the power and speed of some of its SmartSwitch routers, used by phone companies and corporations to route data traffic.

The Networld+Interop show, featuring products from more than 600 vendors, runs Tuesday to Thursday at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
