Excellent article in WSJ this AM. Jist is what I have been saying all along:

1. 2 beats 1 - ATT and Bells is better for consumers than just Bells
2. Bell mergers have been approved because combining 2 monopolies is not anticompetitive. Same goes for cable companies.
3. We don't know if cable access will be substantial problem because there is competing technology (DSL), not all people have cable, and cable is a shared media which presents technical problems with too many users.
4. The 1996 Act calls for competition and the fact is that all we've seen is combinations - not competition. The T deals present an opportunity to show that the Act did bring competition.

In my opinion, if the politians really want competition in the residential loop sooner rather than later, they have no choice but to approve this deal. We'll see over the next 9 months where their interests really lie.
