Introductory rates, free trials, teasers, etc. are tried and proven marketing techniques which of course will find analogs on the net.

Yes. And the net analog is done in two ways at this time: Free trials or the mix of premium and free content. With magazines and newspapers, a reader can buy one copy or a dozen copies on the newsstand. We may one day see a similar single-copy offering on the web, but the free/premium method works better than what could be done with print. A site offers free content that's compelling enough that it draws many people (and thereby increases the advertising base) and convinces at least a few to pay for even more.
