<<Donald,
Interesting post on STK. If you like them, you should really like
QNTM, or at least the DLT stub that will be issued soon. In the QNTM CC, an analyst specifically asked QNTM management about how they thought DLT and SDLT stacked up against STK's new drives. Their reply was that STK's products aimed at a higher end market, and are twice as expensive as DLT for not that much more functionality. Most people, they said, don't need as many features as STK had, and certainly not for their price. .... Sam>>

I do like QNTM and the above comments are mostly correct. STK is aimed at people who need terabyte systems with automatic access, so they are definitely high end and the functionality is somewhat different than just buying DLTs (this is the one thing above that isn't really right in the sense that the functionality one is comparing is so different that it doesn't help much). For most of my data and backups, I am happy with 8mm and DLT and can't see paying the price for the STK systems. However, having such a system available is very nice when you would like to look at various pieces of a few terabytes of data that would require you to sort through a few thousand tapes (I have used a STK system for this purpose at a lab I work at and it is nice to be able to download over the internet a selected file from among many without having to mess with my own tape library). So big companies with the need to have fast access to very large data sets will pay for these systems as well as others such as researchers when they need to deal with terabyte data sets.

Bottom line to me is that QNTM and STK complement each other and I think both have a lot of possibilities for growth, but while I can understand the technology, I am very poor at understanding specific companies and how they will execute their business. That's why I like SI!

Here are some new press releases where STK announces a deal for Access Graphics to sell their products and for over 10 VARs to sell their products.
