I am not even talking about my beliefs. I am just asking you why scholars of the Bible can not agree on it's meaning, and what the implications of that are.

It is a fact that people can not agree on this. That much is beyond dispute. Is the fault God's or man's? If it is man's, that means that God is limited in his ability to determine what man is and is not ultimately capable of. If it is God's, then that has other implications. The third alternative is that it is not meant to be taken literally.
