Cabletron Upgrades SmartSwitch Family to
Support New Layer 4 (BusinessWire)

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 10, 1999--
New SmartSwitch Modules and Firmware Upgrade Deliver
Application-based Switching to More Than 10 Million Users
Cabletron Systems [CS-news] today unveiled a new suite of modules
for its SmartSwitch 9000 platform, as well as a cost-effective
firmware upgrade path that enables application-based switching across
its entire lineup of SmartSwitch 2000, 6000 and 9000 switching
solutions.
The new functionality cost-effectively extends Layer 4 features,
enabling network managers to administer router-like control over their
entire network from the wiring closet to the backbone. Unlike other
vendors who require Layer 3 router configuration complexity to yield
Layer 4 features, Cabletron delivers the flexibility of Layer 4
application control with the simplicity of Layer 2 switch forwarding.
Additionally, Cabletron's SmartSwitches offer standards-based,
advanced control of IP multicast , IP address protection, protocol
types, broadcasting, filtering, security and prioritization.
Cabletron's award-winning SmartSwitches and SmartSwitch Routers
(SSRs) are integral to the company's newly announced SmartNetworking
QoS initiative, which ensures consistent, predictable,
policy-controlled delivery of business-critical data (see related news
release, also dated 5/10/99).
New Firmware Enables Next-Generation Features
Cabletron's Layer 2 SmartSwitch 2000, 6000 and 9000 platforms are
being firmware-upgraded to cost-effectively enable a host of critical
Layer 3 and Layer 4 features, which will allow customers to unleash
the potential of policy-based QoS in several ways, including:
--Ensuring the delivery of voice or video traffic across a data
infrastructure,
--Creating authorized lists of senders and receivers for
multimedia traffic,
--Preventing unwanted protocols from entering the network,
--Providing access control list security on switch ports,
--Protecting critical server and router network addresses, and
--Prioritizing e-commerce and enterprise resource planning (ERP)
applications.
Michael Skubisz, Cabletron's chief technology officer, explains,
"Cabletron has long had a proven track record of providing investment
protection for our customers. Today's announcement further strengthens
our commitment, as we help our customers take advantage of new
industry features and functionality while at the same time avoiding
costly forklift upgrades." Skubisz continued, "Additionally,
Cabletron's SPECTRUM enterprise management platform helps customers
mask the configuation and deployment complexity of QoS in a
multivendor environment."
New SmartSwitch 9000 Modules Deliver Optimum Performance
Cabletron is also introducing a series of new, next-generation
SmartSwitch 9000 modules that reinforce the company's commitment to
deliver five times the performance at half the price per port every
two years. The any-to-any distributed switching architecture of the
SmartSwitch 9000 maximizes reliability and fault tolerance, while
scaling performance in excess of 35 million pps throughput and 45 Gbps
bandwidth, leveraging the 300 Gbps system capacity. The new module
configurations allow for up to 336 10/100 ports or 56 Gigabit Ethernet
ports in a single chassis. Flexible, high-speed interface modules
(VHSIMs) provide connectivity to FDDI, ATM and Gigabit backbone
technologies, as well as a variety of wide area and remote access
technologies.
Availability

>> A question: anyone with fresh info on options????

Yes, I was able to buy May 10's near close for 1 15/16,
virtually no premium built in. With the strong close
and the P/R's and recent upgrade, imo, the calls are a
steal, (assuming stock doesn't tank)............Skane

P.S brother micheal liu, from "Gizzard" thread assured
me prices will go higher. Mike, can you make that happen
before May 21st?
