Actually, Paul and Kash, I think any P6 CPU, whether it's Pentium Pro/II/III/Xeon or Celeron, can be coupled with an L3 cache on the motherboard if the chipset supported it.

Only in the last year have we seen Slot 1 chipsets emerge from sources other than Intel. Maybe one of these guys might decide to put some L3 cache onto the motherboard and see what sort of benefits it could provide. My guess would be not much, especially considering the cost.
