Technology Leaders and Corporate Users Form Quarter Billion Dollar Investment Fund Targeting Intel's IA-64 Architecture

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 10, 1999--Intel Corporation today announced the formation of the Intel 64 Fund, LLC, an equity investment fund of approximately $250 million available for investing in technology companies developing innovative Internet and enterprise applications.

The fund -- which includes investments from a unique group of leading technology companies as well as large corporate users -- will target solutions for Intel's IA-64 architecture, beginning with the processor code-named Merced.

Intel, along with Compaq, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, NEC and SGI, are co-investors in the Intel 64 Fund. The fund's other investors, managed by Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, include Bank of America, Circuit City, Ford Motor Company, General Electric, McKessonHBOC, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, Reuters, Sabre, SmithKline Beecham, Sumitomo, Sun America and Telmex. Intel will work closely with all co-investors to coordinate the fund, identify portfolio companies and actively support these product development activities.

''This cross-industry effort will accelerate the development of complete software solutions for future IA-64 architecture-based high-end servers and workstations,'' said John Miner, vice president and general manager, Intel's Enterprise Server Group. ''The Intel 64 Fund represents input and investment from an industry cross-section, which will help focus the development of next-generation e-commerce and Internet solutions. The fund will address the needs of an IT community actively preparing for IA-64-based platforms beginning with Merced in mid 2000.''

The Intel 64 Fund will invest in technology companies developing innovative software applications and tools in areas such as e-commerce, Internet infrastructure, advanced enterprise resource planning, design automation, and financial applications and services. All applications will be optimized for IA-64-based platforms and run on a full-range of volume operating systems.

''Morgan Stanley Dean Witter and its affiliate, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter Venture Partners, are very excited to be working with Intel and other technology leaders on the Intel 64 Fund,'' said John Marren, managing director, Technology Investment Banking and Guy de Chazal, managing director, Venture Partners. ''The Intel 64 Fund will provide a unique opportunity for business and technology leaders to work together to shape the direction of information technology. As the Internet has changed the global landscape by dramatically altering the way we communicate, gather information and transact business, the Intel 64 Fund creates a unique opportunity for global users to take advantage of new technologies to innovate how they do business in the new worldwide Internet economy.''

The Intel 64 Fund advisory committee will include representatives from all fund members and leading venture capitalists, Jim Breyer of Accel Partners and Rick Kimball of Technology Crossover Ventures, as outside advisors.

Intel's IA-64 architecture will comprise a family of products that deliver the benefits of 64-bit computing, IA-32 compatibility and volume economies of scale. With the first IA-64 processor, code-named Merced, scheduled for production in mid-2000, this architecture will provide the scalability, resilience and flexibility required to address the needs of the high-end enterprise and e-commerce environments. The IA-64 program has received unprecedented industry support from major server and workstation vendors, operating system vendors, independent software vendors, and suppliers of tools and peripherals enabling end-user choice of the ''best-in-class'' ingredients for their solutions.

The Intel 64 Fund, is one of several Intel and industry programs intended to enable broad adoption of the IA-64 platform. More information regarding the Intel 64 Fund can be found at intel64fund.com.
