Why limit the program to sound effects? Would it be possible to also add olfactory alerts? Sell alerts could begin with a whiff of smoke, a subtle hint of engine trouble, a suggestion that in all likelihood we're going down. Buy alerts might smell sweetly of ripe fruit, ready to be plucked from the branch or vine, or perhaps of honey. This might not be possible with Visual Basic, but perhaps it could be done with an Olfactable Basic (still in development).

I wonder even whether essence of market maker could be distilled for the program. It could be sprinkled over certain symbols prone to manipulation. A good dose of a foul, acrid odor might induce us to stay away from some of those polecats in the pits once and for all.

Traders' favorite fragrances (beer, tobacco or whatever) could be reserved for the outperformers in our portfolios. Click on IBM and the sweet smell of cold cash would waft up from the keyboard.

It might even be possible to demonstrate that stimulation of the olfactory nerves triggers quicker responses in traders than visual cues. If so, olfactory alerts are a must in any trader's toolkit, as essential as the tuna fish sandwich in his or her lunchbox. Put yourself a nose ahead of other traders.

And how about tactile alerts? I haven't touched on those. You could get a real feel for trading with them.

OK, so maybe one idea stinks and the other is tacky. How about dumb suggestion alerts? My screen is blinking -- better go.
