Tao and LSI Logic Form Strategic Relationship LONDON, May 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Tao and LSI Logic (NYSE: LSI), the System on a Chip Company(R), announced today at the Cable & Satellite Show in London that they have entered into a strategic relationship for Tao to mount its JBC Virtual Machine for running Java(TM) applications on LSI Logic's set-top box (STB) reference platforms. LSI Logic is the primary semiconductor supplier to leading consumer electronics manufacturers around the world. Its end-to-end solutions, standard products, and systems on a chip are enabling convergence in a new generation of digital consumer electronics products. Today at the show, LSI Logic also announced the state of the art SC2000 Single-chip STB, providing a cost optimized, end-to-end solution for customers to build next generation set-top boxes for home entertainment. Tao has developed a framework of software technologies designed to run on connected digital appliances for home and mobile networks. One of Tao's products is its ELATE(RTM) JBC Engine, a carefully crafted solution for running Java(TM) applications, combining high performance with very small memory footprint and fully portable libraries. Commenting on the agreement, Graham Nice, Commercial Director at Tao, said: "LSI Logic is taking a very pro-active approach, providing total solutions for its customers. The use of our technology combined with the powerful feature set and the performance/flexibility of the SC2000 for running Java(TM) applications, is a key enabler for LSI to further develop their STB and Digital TV businesses. In an environment where Java(TM) technology is increasingly a globally pervasive standard for Digital TV we are very excited by the opportunities which will be presented to both companies as a result of this relationship." Nicholas Dunn, Marketing Manager for the STB Group, Consumer Products Division at LSI Logic, added: "It is essential for LSI Logic to offer world class solutions to its customers. Invariably this involves working with third parties to ensure that the best available combination of software technologies is available and ported to our hardware. LSI Logic sees the ability to support Java(TM) technology as a strategic capability for LSI to address emerging demand. We regard Tao's ELATE(RTM) JBC Engine as being the practical solution for our markets". The ELATE(RTM) JBC, Tao's system for running PersonalJava(TM) and EmbeddedJava(TM) applications, includes its JBC JIT translator and a full set of compliant Java(TM) libraries including the AWT, all in less than 1.5MB of native code* with performance figures for running applications between ten and thirty times faster than alternative solutions. Tao is also including in the 1.5MB bundle of software its award-winning networked RTOS and the most powerful 2D graphics toolkit, targeted for areas such as sophisticated user interfaces and Electronic Programming Guides. The initial development is using the ELATE(RTM) RTOS but the ELATE(RTM) JBC can run on a variety of operating systems. The Memorandum of Understanding signed between Tao and Sun Microsystems in December'98 will pave the way for Tao to offer its product as an authorized and certified Java(TM) Virtual Machine and will enable LSI Logic to demonstrate a truly compliant, compact and fast implementation on its platforms. * This figure will vary slightly depending on processor architecture.
