NEWS: <<<Gold futures fell on news that the U.K. Treasury plans to sell 125 metric tons of the metal from its reserves. Chevron is in talks to buy Texaco in a stock deal valued at about $42 billion, people familiar with the situation say. A deal would transform the U.S. oil industry, uniting the nation's third and fourth largest energy companies. NBC will merge several of its Web assets with direct marketer Xoom and portal site Snap to form a new company called NBC Internet. NBC will get a 49.9% stake in the new company in return for $880 million in TV ads over 10 years. The bond market lingered just below unchanged as investors still showed signs of interest rate jitters and prepared to absorb this week's Treasury Department quarterly refinancing, as well as some corporate debt issuance. The bellwether 30-year Treasury bond was 2/32 lower in price for a yield of 5.81 percent -- its highest since May 1998. >>>>>>>>
