Tench - It's my understanding that the about to be released (June) Microsoft Office 2000 is designed to take advantage of the expanded instructions available in the Pentium III. That being the case, performance differentials may swing towards the Pentium III, if Office 2000 is part of the benchmark. I'm pretty sure this is the case.

Good investing,
Burt

Re: "Paul, the K6-III 450 MHz is faster than the Pentium III 500 MHz if all of the following is true:
1) You're running Windows 98 as opposed to NT
2) The only programs you'll ever use are Microsoft Office, Netscape, and Internet Explorer"

Yes and AMD has recently backed of performance claims for the K7 to simply "Fastest Windows Processor".

The Kmart 63 - 450 MHz ?

I guess that's why the 450 MHz Kmart 63 is outselling the 500 MHz Pentium ///.

The funny thing is, I thought if these two conditions were true, you
wouldn't NEED anything more than a K6-2 or Celeron."

No, Tench. The REAL FUNNY thing is that a great percentage of home PC buyers only run numbers 1 and 2!!!

For those buyers who want one of the fastest processors, the K6-III is a VERY sensible choice.

Now ain't that FUNNY?
