Some new estimates on handsets . . . ahead of my thoughts of 220MM handset units in year 1999 . . .

STOCKHOLM, May 14 (Reuters) - Sweden's Ericsson (SWED:LME.B),the world's third largest mobile phone maker, expects global mobile phone sales to reach 500 million units in 2003 and 600 million in 2005, Swedish daily Dagens Industri reported on Friday.

Chief executive of Ericsson's Consumer Products division Johan Siberg, said a third of these 500 million units would be sold to first time buyers, with the rest going to consumers who were buying phones for the second or third time.

This was the first time Ericsson has come out with forecasts for 2003 and 2005, the daily said.

In 1998 over 160 million phones were sold with Ericsson accounting for about 24 million of these, the daily said.

This year Ericsson expects global mobile phone sales to reach between 230 million and 250 million, rising to 300 million in 2000.

Ericsson says it aims to be the biggest or second biggest
global mobile phone producer, but does not expect to attain this
goal in 1999, although the launch of new mobile phones will help
boost its market share.

Nokia (HELS:NOK1V) and Motorola (NYSE:MOT) are the world's number
one and two producers of mobile phones.
