NEC Launches Small Disk Drive Device, Clik!TM-USB Drive Kit

"Clik!TM-USB Drive Kit"

NEC announced today the sales of a small and portable disk drive device that uses Clik!TM disk called Clik!TM-USB Drive Kit in Japan (Note 1). It is priced at 29,800 yen and will start to ship on June 1, 1999.

The new disk drive adopts Clik!TM disk with about 40 MB storage capacity in approximately 5 cm all sides as the medium and which can carry like the floppy disk. As for this medium, the size is equivalent to the about half than the 3.5 inch floppy disk (FD, 1.44 MB storage capacity) and the storage capacity is approximately 27 times larger than 3.5" FD. Therefore, it is suitable for storing and exchanging large multimedia data such as graphics, motion picture, and sound.

The new product is 7.2 cm x 13 cm x 2 cm (W x D x H) and weighs approximately 120g. It adopts USB interface and can run on various operating systems such as Microsoft Windows95 (Note 2), Windows98, WindowsCE 2.11, Mac OS 8.5 (Note 3) with systems PC-98NX series, Mobile Gear MC700, IBM AT compatible products (Note 4), and iMacTM (Note 3). It is possible to both connect and disconnect the drive without turning off the power of PC and also adopts Plug&Play. Moreover, because the power is supplied to the drive form the PC through USB cable, the AC adapters nor batteries are not required and it is suitable for mobile use.

Clik!TM-USB Drive Kit comes with the drive, a USB cable, a CD-ROM containing driver software and carrying case.

Due to arrival of the multimedia era and improvement of functionality in PC and peripherals, the chances of handling large volume data such as color picture, sound and motion picture have been increased in both business and personal use.

Also, by the spread of the mobile computing which used a notebook PC and a mobile information device, the mobile storage device is strongly desired from the market.

Moreover, the case which shares large-volume data with more than one PC includes both desktop and PCs have increased and the demand of the storage device which can be used in various platform have also increased.

NEC is planning to ship 100,000 units for next one year.

Darrell,
Can you help decipher this? I'm afraid that options are Greek to me.

biz.yahoo.com

In individual issues, activity stacked up on Monday in options on Iomega Corp. (IOM - news), with the May and August 7.5 puts the busiest options on both the Chicago Board Options Exchange and the American Stock Exchange on Monday.

Volume in the May 7.5 puts at the AMEX totaled 9,067 and 19,657 at the CBOE on open interest of 70,216. The CBOE option ended off 3/16 at 2-1/2.

In the August 7.5 put, CBOE volume totaled 19,600 on open interest of 6,753, and AMEX volume was 9,015. The option closed off 1/8 at 2-3/4.

Also on the CBOE, the Iomega August 5.0 put posted volume of 8,910 on open interest of 10,253. It dipped 1/16 at 13/16.

But the volume buildup on both exchanges was tied to position-adjustment, although implied vols firmed.

''It's a roll,'' said a market maker at the CBOE in Iomega options. ''They're coming in for the August.''

Time-and-sales data for May and August CBOE 7.5 puts showed two, 5,000-lot orders executed as spreads in each expiry. Data also showed the AMEX May and August 7.5 put each had one, 7,500-contract spread executed.

The CBOE market maker said one large customer had rolled ''less than a third of his position'' in the May 7.5 put, but he also said implied vols near the close remained firm.

''Vols are going up a small amount, not a lot,'' he added, quoting the spread at near 96 percent, compared to its more-typical high-80s or low-90s area.

Thanks,
Ken
