Microsoft: Nextel Deal Doesn't Affect Qualcomm Venture

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Microsoft Corp.'s (MSFT) $600 million investment in and wireless data partnership with Nextel Communications Inc. (NXTL) won't affect an earlier partnership between Microsoft and Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM), Microsoft officials said.

In a conference call that followed the announcement of the new alliance between the Redmond, Wash., software giant and Nextel, a wireless phone company based in Reston, Va., Microsoft officials said their company's investment in Nextel will be made in cash.

The investment won't affect the Wireless Knowledge partnership between Microsoft and Qualcomm, a San Diego, Calif., maker of wireless phone equipment. Wireless Knowledge aims at a different layer of the market than the Nextel alliance, Microsoft officials said.
