O/T - Trip to Macedonia. Eight more days until our first volunteer, Dusty, leaves for Macedonia. The next day Dana leaves. Dana has sent this note out after visiting with the sponsoring church in Huntsville yesterday. >>I got back from my trip up to Huntsville late yesterday afternoon -- it was very good to see Peggy Shanahan, the Minister of the Light of Christ Center, again, and to meet with members of her congregation after Mother's Day services to talk about the trip. As we sat talking with church members waiting for the Huntsville Times reporter to arrive, I answered their questions as best I could. Of course, in my own mind, there is much that is unknowable, as the situation there can, and does, change rapidly. I spoke to their basic concerns about my health (very good) and my qualifications, why I was willing to go, and what I hoped to accomplish. I told them I'm resourceful in a number of very practical ways, and am ready to do hard work, take pictures, make notes and sketches, and that I bring to this a strong sense of wanting to do something, anything, to help on a basic human level. I realize the singular importance of this opportunity to witness and record my impressions, and act as a 'pioneer' to establish relationships and a base of information for others who follow in these efforts to better aid these people. When she finally arrived, much the time with the reporter was spent explaining the sequence of events leading up to my decision to go, but she fully understands how central the internet has been in making this happen. Not sure, but I believe the story will be out today or tomorrow, with a photograph of Peggy and me pouring over a map of the area with me holding one of the emergency blankets I'll be taking, along with the airline tickets, which had arrived in Birmingham by Priority Mail just minutes before I left to drive up. Both the reporter and photographer had kind words for our efforts, and wished me good luck - I was especially touched the photographer even made a spontaneous contribution, pressing her donation in my hands, and asking I see it goes to some specific pain or need. I want to thank all of you for what you're doing to make this possible. This most profound experience of my lifetime grows ever closer. Dana<< ____________________________ from Raven: I was very touched by this note and hope some of you will be. Our two volunteers are seeking no rewards, no glory or attention for what they are doing. The situation over there has become more dangerous in recent days, as many of you realize, and neither has wavered. I have not had much luck with responses from this board, but through this board we did receive our most generous contribution, which is giving ERA Television a new laptop and peripherals, so I still come back here from time to time. You never know. We have raised a little over $6,000, which makes it all worthwhile, but we are now still hoping to pull in another 5 or 600 for the guys to purchase flour and oil from over the Greek border. All of our information is on the website at:geocities.com and the story, which appeared on the front page, is in the Huntsville Times (Alabama) today, viewed at:al.com We can stop now and make these 16-hour days of work and Dana and Dusty's trip worthwhile, but - in truth - we would REALLY like to receive more donations in order to buy the flour and oil that we are told by our contact over there (Eddie of ERA) are sorely needed. As you know, we are a very small outfit, but every single dollar you send goes to whatever Mother Tereza and ERA feels is most needed. And every dollar buys something DESPERATELY needed. Please consider helping us in these last 8 days. If ten of you who didn't get around to contributing through Anthony and Fane would send us a hundred dollars, our guys could fill up a pickup truck with badly needed things. Thank you, Raven K_refugees@hotmail.com
