QT is a quality product, but RNWK will continue to be the market leader because that is the sole focus of the company and its leadership. RNWK will make all the right alliances and focus on continued quality improvements in its products. Sites that want to stream media will do it with the product that combines quality with ubiquity and that is (and should continue to be) Real. Jobs uses 'the force' for Web software Apple founder touts Quicktime at developer conference By Rebecca Lynn Eisenberg, CBS MarketWatch Last Update: 5:38 PM ET May 10, 1999 Silicon Stocks SAN JOSE, Calif. (CBS.MW) -- Steve Jobs spared no effort Monday in using the "Star Wars" legend to underscore how serious Apple Computer is about getting into the Web-streaming software market. The interim chief executive, addressing 2,500 software developers, used Apple (AAPL: news, msgs) software to show the much-viewed "Star Wars" movie trailer to make his point. Jobs played the trailer, a digital version that measures 25 megabytes, three times in his keynote address. That popular clip of footage has been downloaded 10 million times using the company's QuickTime Internet multimedia software. "The fact that people downloaded the best-quality version means that users care about quality of video," Jobs told the Worldwide Developers Conference in San Jose, Calif. Jobs pointed out that RealNetworks (RNWK: news, msgs), a leading provider of Web-streaming software, charges for use of its server software while Apple gives it away to "Star Wars" producer Lucasfilm Ltd. and other content providers that want to make their audio and video clips available for Web surfers. Shares of Apple closed down 5/8 at 45 1/4 on volume of 3.5 million.
