Polycom and RealNetworks Announce New Polycom StreamStation, EnablingVideoconferences to Be Streamed Over the Web in Real-Time and On-Demand
Leading Conferencing and Streaming Media Companies Deliver a Cost-Effective, Web-Enabled Videoconferencing Solution Using Polycom's ViewStation Product
And RealNetworks RealSystem G2
LAS VEGAS, May 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Polycom(R), Inc. (Nasdaq: PLCM), the global leader in multimedia collaboration, and RealNetworks(R) (Nasdaq: RNWK), the recognized leader in streaming media, today announced the new Polycom StreamStation(TM).
Making its first public showing at Networld + Interop in Las Vegas this week in RealNetworks Booth #8429, the new Polycom StreamStation incorporates RealNetworks' RealSystem(TM) G2 industry-leading streaming media technology to stream point-to-point or multipoint videoconferences using the Polycom ViewStation to the Web. Using StreamStation, real-time or on-demand videoconferences can be broadcast to any PC with a RealPlayer(R) G2, enabling meeting participants to join videoconferences from the desktop.
"By integrating RealNetworks' RealSystem G2 streaming technology with Polycom's market-leading conferencing products, we now enable any PC on the global network to join a videoconference," said Craig Malloy, general manager of Polycom's videoconferencing division. "With the new Polycom StreamStation, all you need to join a videoconference is a PC with RealPlayer G2, which can be downloaded free of charge from the Web. With more than 60 million registered RealPlayer users currently using RealNetworks' streaming technology, this dramatically increases the number of videoconferencing-enabled sites and potential audience, and is a cost-effective means for numerous participants to be involved in video meetings, briefings, training sessions or corporate communications. Streaming videoconferencing will significantly broaden both the market and applications for videoconferencing as a standard business communication tool."
"Corporations are using streaming media to expand their communications reach and the availability of their content by harnessing the unique interactivity of the Internet," said Len Jordan, senior vice president, Media Systems, RealNetworks, Inc. "By extending multimedia conferencing applications to the Internet and corporate intranets using RealSystem G2, Polycom is dramatically increasing the market that can participate and collaborate via videoconferences."
Designed to enhance Polycom ViewStation systems, the StreamStation enables participants at any location to see and hear a live videoconference and view graphics and presentation materials from the convenience of their PC. Participants can submit text questions or remarks to presenters during meetings via their Web browser. Using StreamStation, meetings can also be stored for future on-demand viewing. StreamStation, in combination with a conferencing version of RealServer(TM) G2, Conferencing Edition and RealProducer(TM) G2, provides a complete streaming solution for conferencing over the Internet and corporate intranets.
"The value of convergence is more than the merging of voice and data networks. It is in how companies leverage this robust unified network to make their businesses more productive by reducing operating costs and increasing the collective value of their professional workforce," said Hans Schwarz, senior vice president and general manager of data networking at Siemens Information and Communication Networks, a leading global networking firm and Polycom's reseller and partner. "Collaboration technologies, such as Polycom's StreamStation, enable companies to realize the value of these assets by bringing people and technology together in a real-time, interactive, multimedia environment."
Using the Polycom StreamStation, customers can now:
* Instantly reach coworkers and clients with streaming video over the Web
* Attend meetings from any location using a PC and RealPlayer G2 from
RealNetworks
