William, do you think that China being bombed by the USA will affect Q! sales to China or elsewhere? I saw somebody already sold their stock because of it. Politics and Qualcomm are closely related so the discussion belongs here as much as does baseball [which we thankfully see very little of these days though I hasten to add that I have the greatest admiration for Mark McGiver and his incredible string of touchdowns - some of my best friends have been to baseball stadiums]. But how about this lot by Jim Willie CB? ------------------------------------------------------ //China has been cowtowing to US politicians and business leaders for well over a year now... they want Most Favored Nation status and World Trade Org recognition... their growing economy needs the easier trade terms, letters of credit, etc... they have held firm on not devaluing their yuan... they are good international citizens lately, except for some piracy squabbles this will pass... unfortunately, the Chinese culture does not value life very highly, not like the West... so what if they allow the masses to get all worked up outside our embassy? China wants the best technology, period// ------------------------------------------------------------- That is a naive view, here's why. People don't just buy what the seller thinks is the best technology. If they dislike the seller, the seller will have to earn a living elsewhere. For example the USA won't allow NZ [a very kowtowing-to-the-USA nation] to sell sheep meat because the inefficient USA farmers are whining like 747s. Although the USA consumer would like to consume the nuclear free lamb from here, they are not allowed to. You would think the USA would be in favour of Free Trade. Nope, that's not the case either. So already, we have an example where the best technology doesn't sell. Now imagine if NZ was bombing and threatening the USA. While that isn't a great threat, but I'm working on it, I doubt that the USA would say, "Hay, what the heck, it's the best technology, get the checkbook out Martha". How about that line, "...the Chinese culture doesn't value life very highly, not like the west..."? Hay Ramsey, what's your life worth? I'll give you $5 to pull my rickshaw! Do you Chinese cry if your children die? There are a lot of Chinese living around me and always have been. Contrary to the theorem of highly valued life being a specially defended cultural icon of the NRA and the West in general, I've seen more value and respect for life and other people from Chinese culture than shown by the world of Columbine, Hiroshima, Carpet Bombing, My Lai, Bulldozing dirt over Iraqis and good ol' Ollie North. How many redskins are left? Is there still segregation and slavery? Have the American-Chinese been jailed yet as a threat to national security? Sure I remember the cultural revolution; China isn't all lily pads and fengshui. I'm just pointing out that the West isn't all sacred human life and respect for people. Incidentally, when did China kowtow to US politicians and business leaders? I don't recall seeing that. So what if they have masses rioting around the USA embassy? Here's what - each of those people who are hurt or offended by the USA will not buy American. They will oppose USA interests. Rightly so. Criminals must experience the consequences of their behaviour - bombing the Chinese embassy with super accurate laser-guided bombs after vetting targets using the CIA and others is either very incredibly stupid or criminal. Unless the USA can show that it was incredibly stupid, we have to presume that it was criminal. So, which do you think it is? I understand that you think politics and Qualcomm don't mix and Ramsey agrees with you [though because his life is valued so lowly we can ignore him], but I disagree. Meanwhile, Q! is so good that they have licensed Koreans, Japanese and Europeans to use CDMA technology so even if USA business is cut off, Q! won't be. Anyway, Q! is a NZ owned business. Isn't Irwin great?!! Of course, if Chinese companies want licences from Q! they can buy them too. Mqurice PS: Anyway William, your post should have been by private mail, not cluttering this thread. Only Qualcomm related posts should be in the thread - the rest in private mail or the coffee shop. Also, for the dyxlexics among you, the word is kowtowing, not 'cowtowing'. Cowtowing is what you do when crossing a river and you tie the cows together by the horns and tow them across to the other side. Yes, I know that China is worried more about Taiwan than Kosovo! The parallel isn't nice for them.
