I've never heard of anyone who attempted to use heroin in the same way as gin or marijuana, without catastrophic results.

Well, perhaps you need to listen more closely. Of course you said the treatment aisle. Why would someone who tried it a few times and quit seek treatment? Even within the recovery community, you've got to include the people with other drugs of choice in the equation. Surely you're aware that some who will do one particular drug 24/7/365 find most of the rest boring or unsatisfactory, and will use them only when the primary drug is unavailable.

In my squandered youth I ran with a fast crowd. Heroin was 'chic' for a while. About 20 of these folks tried it. About 12 used more than once, and only one ended up become a stone cold junkie. I never did myself, but that was because I read this stupid scared straight type book about it when I was ~9.
