My interview on AOL MarketTalk Live last Friday: Sage Lion: Sage is pleased to welcome Mr. Tae Kim, Editor-in-Chief at Tigerinvestor.com! TaeKim: Good Afternoon, pleased to be here. Question: Can you tell us what TigerInvestor.com is all about and how you came to found this web site? TaeKim: TigerInvestor.com is one of the most popular investing sites on the net. Our goal is to be the best source of market news, trading articles, and free Wall Street quality equity research for the over 7 million online investors out there. I founded TigerInvestor.com at the beginning of this year out of the stock newsletter that I started when I was a student at Brown University. Question: What are your thoughts on leading internet companies and their present valuations? TaeKim: I think the valuations are probably very high at this point especially with the resurgence in the past few months. But the blue chips like AMZN, AOL and Yahoo can still be compelling. Question: Tae how do you turn a profit? TaeKim: Currently we are investing in acquiring as many members as possible, but eventually our profits will be through advertising and e-commerce (partnerships). Very much like other content providers such as CNet and CBS Market Watch. Question: To what extent are day traders affecting the volatility in the stock market? Is your site totally free? TaeKim: My site is totally free. Daytraders I think are having a big impact on the volatility of the market. There are statistics that investors and day trading firms account for as much as 10% of the market. I think this will continue into the foreseeable future. With 7 million online traders this is bound to grow. Question: If cable is multilane road why in the world AOL not in it ? TaeKim: You should ask AOL. But I think AOL really needs to get it's act together and get into the broadband game. Either through cable modems relationships or DSL They can't rely on their lobbying efforts for open ISP access to the various broadband distributions. Question: Will aol rebound? TaeKim: I think AOL is still in a dominant position and it definitely can rebound if it executes it's strategy of E-commerce which was the key in Sun and Netscape deal. Currently AOL has 17 million users and is on track to get an amazing 21 million users by the end of this year. They are the true internet giant. Another kicker is ICQ which has 20 million users, which AOL also owns. If AOL can leverage all these customer relationships and find a way to get onto broadband it can certainly rebound and increase their current market capitalization of 112 billion dollars. Question: What are your thoughts on CMGI and other internet "incubator" operations? TaeKim: CMGI is probably the number one public venture capital / internet incubator companies. I think CMGI and Go2Net are the two premiere names. However with the recent past year performance of both of these companies increasing about 10 fold I believe, raises valuation issues. I would be interested in buying both these companies upon any large correction, but not now. Question: DCLK: thoughts? TaeKim: DCLK is also one of the premiere names in internet advertising. I do have questions if they can hold their market leading stature as other companies such as FlyCast and ModemMedia have gone public and now have access to a large amount of capital to compete with DCLK Question: SFE: your opinion? TaeKim: SFE, I just heard they are another internet incubator play I've not been able to follow it closely. Question: Your input on the on-line brokers, please? TaeKim: Online brokers represent a tremendous paradigm shift in the financial services industry. I believe they will continue to gain millions of new accounts. I personally like E*Trade as the best internet online broker pure play. Question: Does CBS have the best internet strategy of the major networks? TaeKim: I believe so. They are one of the first to invest with equity stakes in sites such as CBS SportsLine. And CBS Market Watch. They were also the first to advertise on the annoying sign off screen on AOL. Which I believed helped increase their ratings. Question: Do you foresee an AOL-ATT alliance in the future? Where would ATHM stand? TaeKim: I don't see AT&T allying itself now with AOL. At this point I see AT&T going alone by itself because they have all their cards in place. @Home remains one of the center pieces in AT&T's future internet E-commerce and telecommunications strategy. AT&T showed their commitment and dedication to @Home by letting them acquire Excite in a multibillion dollar deal. Question: Would you consider Goldman Sachs to be a must own brokerage operation? TaeKim: I think Goldman Sachs is the premiere name in investment banking and trading. At this valuation I don't think it compares favorably to the other major names such as Morgan Stanley and Merrill Lynch. However, upon a correction Goldman Sachs would be a great company to buy. Sage Lion: Thank you for joining us today Mr. Kim! Any parting shots? TaeKim: It's been a pleasure to chat with you. Be sure to visit TigerInvestor.com and feel free to email me at KIMTJ@aol.com
