bp,

I did not say this was a "good thing".

I asked how this has changed the ultimate balance of power?

Has China gained a sudden advantage over the US?

Do they have the capability of launching a pre-emptive strike that would neutralize our ability to respond?? (can we launch a pre-emptive strike on them with our 1,000s of warheads, and "boomer" subs swimming just miles off their shores??)

So while its terrible that our lax security permitted our nation's secrets from being stolen, in the grand scheme it has only permitted China to close an ever widening gap in the nuclear game of mutually assured destruction (M.A.D.) And we've been playing that game with the Russians for decades. Bejing is just trying to deal itself into the game in order to gain a bit of "respect" from the US.

Btw, don't you think the Russians are a bit more nervous than the US about China gaining advanced nuclear technology? After all, they have fought various border skirmishes over contested territory in the past and China looks with envy at the huge natural resource that is Siberia.

Regards,

Ron
