Ameritech interested in bigger Belgacom stake
(last year NN got nice ATM deal with Belgacom)

ANTWERP, Belgium, May 11 (Reuters) - Ameritech Chairman and CEO Dick
Notebaert said on Tuesday his company was interested in increasing its stake in Belgian
telecommunications operator Belgacom.

''We've consistently expressed our interest in further developing our stake in Belgacom,''
Notebaert told reporters on the sidelines of a conference in Antwerp.

The U.S. telecoms company heads a consortium that owns 49.9 percent of Belgacom. The Belgian government holds a
majority stake.

Notebaert said he would like the government to divest more of its Belgacom shares, although the timing was up to Belgian
authorities.

''An IPO (initial public offering) would make sense when the market is right,'' he said. ''I happen to believe shares should be
make public.''

Belgian Telecommunications Minister Elio Di Rupo has repeatedly defended the government's continuing control over
Belgacom.

But Notebaert said Belgian authorities had taken a hands-off approach to Belgacom operations. ''The government has kept
its word and stayed away from day-to-day business.''
