Ericsson and Telular sign agreement for TDMA Fixed Cellular Terminals

Ericsson and Telular Corporation announce the formalization of an agreement for product development and marketing of the Telular TDMA Fixed Cellular Terminals (FCT) worldwide. Ericsson will incorporate Telular's FCTs into its product portfolio to provide carriers with a complete, turnkey solution for fixed cellular applications, based on the TDMA standard.

Telular and Ericsson will conduct joint product development activities supporting the integration of the Ericsson TDMA Radio Module into the terminals. In addition, a future product roadmap will be developed jointly. Ericsson will offer the SX4e FCT from Telular when proposing its TDMA fixed cellular systems and solutions to operators. General availability of the Telular terminals is scheduled for September 1999. This agreement is for the next generation of fixed cellular terminals which will provide features such as dual band (850/1900 MHz) functionality and support for both fax and data service.

The new FCTs are being developed for deployment in fixed cellular networks, which are cellular networks in which some or all subscribers are "fixed," having no mobility, but use a wireless connection to the network. Fixed networks can be installed in a fraction of the time of a traditional wired network. This is an alternative or compliment to wired subscriber networks.

This solution is gaining increasing attention in many markets.
Ericsson is the leading provider in the new telecoms world, with communications solutions that combine telecom and datacom technologies with freedom of mobility for the user. With more than 100,000 employees in 140 countries, Ericsson simplifies communications for its customers - network operators, service providers, enterprises and consumers - the world over.

Additional information
There are approximately 95 million subscribers using TDMA/AMPS networks worldwide. TDMA is commercially available as a dual-band (850/1900 MHz) and dual-mode (analog-digital) technology. Nearly 23 million subscribers are already using TDMA digital services. TDMA (IS-136) already delivers nearly all of the IMT-2000 functionality and is being further enhanced to deliver all IMT-2000 capabilities in the existing 850 and 1900 MHz frequency bands and in the new 2 GHz band.

Telular's proprietary telecommunications interface technology enables standard phone systems, fax, computer modem or monitored alarm systems to utilize available cellular wireless service for either primary or back-up communications. Products developed and marketed by Telular include the Phonecell@ and Teleguard@ lines. (Nasdaq: WRLS)

Jim, there's no way Ericsson is getting into CDMA next year. They have all along denied any interest in IS95 and I have been lectured by Mika and co for my obtuseness in thinking that Ericy was even remotely interested. So this report must be incorrect. Check with Tero and Mika, they'll tell you that Ericy is not interested in cdmaOne or IS-95.

Ericy invented Multimedia W-CDMA for Wireless Internet access, back in the 1880s and has repeatedly and time after time categorically stated that they are not interested in and have no need of anything from Qualcomm. Qualcomm was stated time after time by Ericy as breaching patent rights of the great Ericy invention.

Ericy will be selling their W-CDMA invention, but not for a couple of years yet, so this news release must be wrong. If it isn't, then what on earth is going on and who can we believe? Tero? Mika? Ericy?
