Roach, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Tandy Corporation; Previously Chief Executive Officer, Tandy Corp,1981, to December 1998; President, Tandy Corp, 1980, to 1995; (2) Justin Industries, Inc. and Emultek Ltd. age 60 @Tandy 1980 ================================================== FORT WORTH, Texas, May 11 (Reuters) - Tandy Corp. <TAN.N>, parent of the RadioShack consumer electronics chain, on Tuesday said John Roach, its chairman and former chief executive, is retiring on May 20 -- a year earlier than planned -- and will be succeeded by current president and CEO Leonard Roberts. Tandy previously had said Roach would remain chairman through May 2000 following his retirement as CEO in January of this year. "Tandy is on a strong course and therefore I believe that the transition can be completed a year earlier than planned," Roach said in a prepared statement. Roach, 60, has seen Tandy through the closings of its 19-store Incredible Universe chain and of the 53-store McDuff Supercenters chain, both of which lost money. Under Roach the company also sold its Computer City chain, at a loss, to CompUSA Inc. <CPU.N>. Roberts, 50, joined Tandy in 1993 as president of RadioShack, the nation's largest consumer electronics chain by number of outlets with 5,000 company-owned stores and 2,000 deal-franchised ones. The chain is a major reseller of Sprint Corp. <FON.N> wireless phone products and sells only personal computers made by Compaq Computer Corp. <CPQ.N>, the world's largest PC maker. Roach will assume the honorary position of chairman emeritus of Tandy, and will continue as chairman of both Justin Industries Inc. <JSTN.O>, a maker of building materials, and Texas Christian University.
