James-

I don't know for sure either, but according to the Fall 1996 WindWord...

<http://www.wrs.com/windword/html/nci.html>

"Wind River Systems has entered into a strategic relationship with Network Computer, Inc.™ (NCI™), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Oracle Corp., planning to provide Wind River operating system technology and development tools for the next-generation network computer (NC™).

“As a strong supporter of the network computer strategy first articulated by Larry Ellison of Oracle in September 1995, Wind River is extremely happy to have been selected by the NCI engineering staff to play such a pivotal role in its flagship network computer system,” said Ron Abelmann, president and CEO of Wind River Systems.” This selection underscores the confidence that NCI has placed in Wind River to help support NCI's leadership position in network computing technology.”

“After a thorough evaluation, NCI decided to work with Wind River Systems because of its proven leadership in the embedded marketplace, extensive platform support, leading-edge operating system technology, and open Tornado development environment,” added Jerry Baker, president and CEO of Network Computer, Inc. “We look forward to a strong relationship between our two companies as a major ingredient for supporting NCI's long-term business goals.”

From this, it would appear that VxWorks is going to be their OS of choice. And I am looking forward to this thread's much more technically savvy folks letting us know the whole story and explaining what it all means.
