Frank, Nortel had a separate PR earlier: news.com . I agree that "fusing" still has not been properly explained. Probably a non-techie wrote the PR and made a bad choice of terms to explain some mundane technical detail.

I particularly liked the following excerpt from the Nortel article:
"Kathy Szelag, vice president of marketing for Lucent's optical networking group, described the current climate as "ungodly hot" for its DWDM technology." Makes the future look pretty bright for GBLX, ABOV, LVLT, etc. I think that anyone doing a halfway competent job of delivering bandwidth can grow their business at a fantastic rate.
