LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 11, 1999--
ASP Industry Consortium To Foster Understanding Of and Guidelines For New Multi-Billion Dollar Market
At a press conference held today at Networld+Interop, 25 leading technology companies announced that they have formed an international advocacy group dedicated to promoting greater understanding of and guidelines for the fast-emerging application service provider industry. Based in Massachusetts, the Application Service Provider Industry Consortium (ASP Industry Consortium) will sponsor research, foster standards and work to articulate the measurable benefits of the evolving ASP delivery model. The 25 founding members of the ASP Industry Consortium include AT&T (NYSE:T); AristaSoft Corp., Boundless Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:BDLS); Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO); Citrix Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CTXS); Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ); Cylex Systems, Inc., Ernst & Young LLP; Exodus, Inc. (NASDAQ:EXDS); FutureLink Distribution Corp. (NASDAQ:FLNK); GTE (NYSE:GTE); Great Plains Software (NASDAQ:GPSI); IBM Corp. (NYSE:IBM); Interpath Communications, Inc.; JAWS Technologies Inc. (NASD OTC BB:JAWZ); Marimba, Inc. (NASDAQ:MRBA); Onyx Software Corp. (NASDAQ:ONXS); SaskTel; Sharp Electronics Corp.; Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ:SUNW); The Taylor Group; Telecomputing ASA; UUNET (an MCIWorldCom Company, NASDAQ:WCOM); Verio, Inc. (NASDAQ:VRIO); and Wyse Technology. Representatives from the 25 founding member companies held their first face-to-face organizational meeting earlier this month. Officers have been elected: Traver Gruen-Kennedy of Citrix, Chairman and spokesperson for the group; Cameron Chell of FutureLink, President; Paula Hunter of Compaq Computer Corporation, Vice President; and Chad Corneil of Great Plains, Secretary-Treasurer. Representatives of the 25 ASP Industry Consortium founders hold seats on the ASP Industry Consortium, Inc. Board of Directors. An application service provider manages and delivers application capabilities to multiple entities from data centers across a wide area network. ASPs give customers a viable alternative to procuring and implementing complex systems themselves. In some cases, ASPs even provide customers with a comprehensive alternative to building and managing internal information technology operations. ASP customers also are able to control more precisely the total cost of technology ownership through scheduled payment schemes. Though the ASP market is relatively new, computer industry analysts foresee rapid growth and multi-billion dollar annual sales within the next few years. Companies interested in furthering awareness and growth of the ASP industry are invited to join the ASP Industry Consortium. There are three levels of consortium participation - Founding, Executive and Associate membership - with varying annual dues and privileges. Membership and other information about the ASP Industry Consortium is available on the consortium's Web site at www.aspindustry.org or by calling the consortium at 781-246-9321.
