I loved How the Irish Saved Civilization Freddy recommended it a couple of years ago-- Cahill has also written another which I haven't read yet-The GIft of the Jews. I know he is not "scholarly" but he is readable and entertaining- and I retain more that way than by yawning through a textbook.

Only thing I ever read by James-(if we are talking Henry?) is Turn of the Screw, which was dark and Gothicky. I loved it. Oh- and I think he wrote The Aspern Papers, which was made into an opera- and I loved the opera...

What was the contrast between Patrick and Augustine? I don't recall that part of the book. You don't like the old ex-Manichee with his concubine? God, make me pure, but not just yet...
