I used to live in Germany...and not only did you have to PAY for a local call...but you paid for the time spent on the phone during that local call.

Our phone had a little meter on it! It would count the minutes you were on the phone...It didn't matter if you were calling the apartment next door...you paid for every second of phone use.

Believe me, many Americans in Europe nearly went into bankruptcy paying their *nasty* phone bills before they knew how it all worked! Local calls were bad enough...you should have seen the Long Distance bills!

Most people would have been better off buying a plane ticket and visiting their loved ones...rather than calling them on the phone...

That is why there is this battle for free Internet service in Europe...because those poor folks have to pay just to use their phone to order a pizza from down the street...much less sitting on the computer for hours "cheering" along their stock holdings!

Aloha,
Mary
