I have heard a lot of opinion on this, all over the map. One source says that Rando made a killing on his DEC options when they became CPQ shares, and had just had enough of the rat race. Another camp says that the CPQ service organization was being reorganized along GEO lines and that Rando did not want to move to another position within CPQ. A third opinion is that the service team has not been successful enough in integrating that organization with the CPQ field. All of these seem plausible. I don't know the real story, maybe all of the above.
