"Article after article pits the two in a competitive race."

It's because they compete that there is a race at all.

What do you suppose the outcome would be if a deal was struck between the two, thus eliminating that race, so to speak?

AOL has had its run, now its time for ATHM and ATT.

Good news about AOL drives ATHM down. Good news about ATHM drives AOL down
This is only a short term effect. AOL is rising because it fell further in the selloff.
In the long term AOL and ATHM still track each other pretty well. This is because they are both driven on the same hopes.
