Beijing May Evoke Patriotism If Bullied
1999.05.11¡@2:47am Taiwan time updated
Singapore, May 10 (CNA) Evoking mainland Chinese nationalism will become an important factor in future policy-making maneuvers by Beijing if there is evidence of unjustified foreign hostility toward mainland China, the head of a think tank in Singapore has warned.

"China has been deeply affected ... by the idea that the world will be dominated by, if not dependent on, one superpower -- the United States," said Professor Wang Gungwu, director of the East Asian Institute at the National University of Singapore.

In his monograph on mainland China and Southeast Asia, a copy of which was obtained by The Straits Times on Sunday, Wang said that mainland leaders are reminded by their own history that, when many states struggle for power and wealth, it is crucial to guard against a sole power emerging to dominate the others.

"They are not sure that the present situation is analogous to the past, but they have found the idea helpful in their own analysts of future relations with the US," he said.

Gold conspiracy theorists go into over-drive

<< THEY look like you and me; have ordinary jobs, families even. But they differ in one essential way. They are "gold conspiracy theorists". Men and women linked the world over by a faith in the value of gold, and an unstinting belief that the dollar gold price is being sabotaged by short people in high places.

Gold conspiracy theorists come in different shapes and sizes. One of the more extreme factions is the US-based organisation Gata or the Gold Anti-Trust Action Committee. It asserts, in strident terms, that the gold price is being manipulated; in other words, whenever the gold starts on a rally, action is taken to depress sentiment about the metal, thereby pegging the price.

Two of SA's gold producers, while supporting Gata's assumptions about gold price manipulation, have dismissed the group as "right-wing wackos". "It's the way they make their points," one representative said. Unperturbed, Gata recently retained anti-trust and securities law firm Berger & Montague to help them present evidence that the price and supply of gold is being controlled by a cartel of Wall Street investment houses and bullion banks...... >>
