<Since Merced is much faster than current X86 technology, logic would seem to indicate that it would need Rambus more than X86????>

No need to worry. RDRAM increases the memory bandwidth per channel. Merced will get its memory bandwidth by combining multiple SDRAM channels together. Because servers need huge amounts of memory (on the order of gigabytes), they usually feature multiple memory channels anyway. Supporting huge amounts of memory using RDRAM channels would be overkill in bandwidth and expensive.

Desktops don't need as much memory as servers. That is why desktop systems can go with less-complicated single-channel memory systems. When you have only one memory channel, RDRAM is a big advantage over SDRAM.
